In God of War, venturing into Tyr's Vault during The Black Rune quest presents Kratos and Atreus with complex environmental puzzles. One major hurdle requires players to deactivate the vault's defenses to progress deeper toward their ultimate objective. Understanding the mechanics of the revolving rings and energy transfer is essential to completing this task without unnecessary backtracking.
Reaching the Upper Balcony
Upon entering the main vault chamber, you will notice large spinning rings that block access to the mechanisms below. To begin solving the puzzle, locate the cracked wall on the right side of the vault entrance and climb up to the upper balcony. Clearing out any hostile Draugr or Nightmares on this upper level allows you to focus on the puzzle without interruption.
Manipulating the Winds of Hel
Standing on the upper level gives Kratos a clear line of sight to the inner revolving ring containing the Winds of Hel. The puzzle clue warns that thought is faster than wind, implying that running the energy straight down to the door will fail due to the strict timer. You must siphon the energy from the inner ring and immediately transfer it to the unpowered outer ring directly below you.
Unlocking the Side Room Mechanism
Once the Winds of Hel are safely stored in the outer ring, climb down the chain to return to the ground floor. From this lower position, grab the energy from the outer ring and quickly sprint into the adjacent side room. Deposit the energy into the mounted sphere receptacle to lower the room's central wheel mechanism.
Navigating the Subsequent Traps
Activating the wheel mechanism opens up new corridors filled with rotating saw blades and floor hazards. You can use the Leviathan Axe to freeze specific gears and create safe gaps through the deadly traps. Completing these steps ensures Kratos deactivates the defenses safely, allowing the journey to continue toward retrieving the Black Rune.
